The Size and Importance of the Greek Slave Trade in the Fourteenth Century

My research will study the Greek slave trade, in particular in the first half of the fourteenth century. By this phenomenon I mean the enslavement and sale of the inhabitants of the Byzantine empire at the hands of Latins, Turks, and rarely even Greeks themselves. The Mediterranean slave trade thrived in the period under consideration, as attested by the development of the more famous Black Sea trade, which brought slaves from Crimea to the Mamluk sultanate via the Genoese trade networks. However, a series of characteristics seem to set the Greek slave trade apart from other contemporary 'slave trades'.
